The Ballad of Sparkle Dad

Daddy lives in a mobile home.
It hasn’t moved for years.
Daddy collects lighthouses.
It was subtle at first,
but now it’s getting out of hand.
Daddy drives a bus.
A bus that flies through the air,
and fills his cells with cancer.
Daddy buys rolling papers
for too-cool-for-school fools,
but only if they’re smokin’ grass.
No one loves cali-grass like a cali-dad.

What pairs best
With a pair of jeans?
Something that Sparkles
Something for daddy to wear
while he makes friends on craigslist
and buys them nice things.

How much do you hate that word?
Daddy
Thinking of your father,
yet how can a man you respect so much,
seem so fragile?

All the Daddies lost the war
To an army led by Oedipus,
fueled by angst.
Fueled by teenagers smoking cigarettes
and then chewing gum,
so that mom doesn’t find out.

A denim vest.
A denim smile.
Drive me to the market
for cereal and beer.

What a strange place to be on a Monday night.
Celebrating as the son I never was,
with a dad I never had.

Just like a heartbeat,
Sparkle Dad came and went.
Until he never came back.

I saw Sparkle Dad’s ghost on the bus
He looked like he was going somewhere
that he’d never been before
He looked like he missed someone.
He looked like he lived on the bus.

And Sparkle Dad knew
that all of his friends
would die one day,
and so would he.
So he laughed,
so he could
remain
calm
